Longform criticism
How faithful is faithful enough?
Adaptations rarely fail because they change the story; they fail when they lose what the story was for. Measuring fidelity means looking past plot points to tone, character interiority, and the sense that a world keeps existing beyond the page. A source novel builds its lore through appendices, letters, and half-told histories, and a screen version must choose which of those threads to keep visible. The strongest adaptations treat the book as a set of questions rather than a checklist. They ask which scenes carry the theme, which invented material respects the original's silences, and where a change opens a room the novel left closed. Read this way, a comparison is less a scorecard than a conversation about what each medium can hold.
Expansiveness is the other test. Speculative fiction earns its reputation through depth: histories that predate the protagonists, cultures with their own grammar, and maps that promise more than one story can show. When a series extends that depth onto the screen, it has to decide how much of the lore to explain and how much to leave to the reader. We look at both questions together. A faithful adaptation can still flatten a world, and an unfaithful one can deepen it. Our aim is to show where each choice lands, and to say plainly when the evidence is thin.
